Whereas cannabis sativa is a tall, thin plant that needs a longer growing season and so is typically found in regions such as Mexico, examples of this type of plant include Haze and Colombia Gold.

There has tended to be a focus within today’s society of cannabis as a mood-altering substance and it has been used as such throughout history both in religious practises and to stimulate creativity as well as to treat disease. Currently, it is possible to buy medical cannabis in some states in the US, as it is known to alleviate the symptoms of some long-term illnesses as well as the effects of chemotherapy. Moreover, the first evidence of the medicinal use of cannabis can be traced back to a 5,000 year old Chinese health publication, which described it as a herbal remedy. The primary active ingredient in the cannabis plant is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).
