In 2000 a new drug was released on to the market, synthetic cannabis, this is a drug that mimics the effects of natural cannabis. The synthetic versions are blends of herbs and spices laced with cannabis like chemicals, and are sold under a variety of names, including Spice, K2, Red X Dawn, Blaze and Mr Smiley. The drug is now illegal in many European countries and many states in America. Synthetic cannabis is attractive to some individuals as unlike natural cannabis it does not show up in urine tests and cannot be detected by sniffer dogs. One of the biggest problems with the drug is that it is not regulated so when the drug is purchased it is unknown exactly what it contains. The Guardian and Mixmag have recently conducted a survey into the effects of synthetic cannabis.

The survey, which has been one of the largest surveys conducted on present drug experiences, found that synthetic cannabis is viewed as more harmful than natural cannabis, and is less likely to provide pleasurable highs. Participants who had tried synthetic cannabis rated it as more likely to deliver unwanted negative effects while high. It was rated more likely to induce feelings of paranoia, and was more harmful on the lungs. A significant number of synthetic cannabis users reported that they had sought emergency medical help after using the drug. The most common symptoms were panic and anxiety, followed by paranoia, breathing difficulties, sweatiness and chest pain. When participants were asked which form of cannabis they would choose to use, having tried both kinds, a huge 93% of respondents opted for natural cannabis,

As the drug is still relatively new the full range and extent of effects is hugely under researched, however, the short term symptom patterns that are beginning to emerge are not like those of natural cannabis. The adverse effects of the synthetic form are more prevalent. What makes problems worse is that very little is known about synthetic cannabis or how to treat an adverse reaction or even overdose.
