The machine was established in New Zealand where cannabis use is illegal and can attract penalties including fines and imprisonment, with harsher sentences being imposed for dealing than for possession, like here in the UK. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of cannabis use in the world, with more than 13 per cent of adults estimated to smoke it regularly.

When most of us think about vending machines we think sweets, crisps, chocolate and drinks this is not what you will find in the vending machine in the Daktory, New Zealand's first cannabis club. Members of the club have replaced the snacks with one gram bags of cannabis, this was an attempt to avoid members of the club being charged with dealing the drug following the founder of the club, Dakta Green being jailed in June 2011 for possessing, selling and allowing the club warehouse to be used for drug taking activity. The club originally opened in November 2008 and is called the Daktory, named after its founder, it is based in West Auckland.

The Daktory is quite simply a converted factory where members can meet up and smoke cannabis. The Daktory members also own a bus named The Mary Jane or the ‘Cannabus’, every Sunday the group hotbox the Cannabus, which holds the world record for the most individuals to hotbox a bus. The cannabis club is a controlled community and is an adults-only, not-for-profit social club providing a comfortable environment where cannabis users can meet and relax. Members of the club believe that the group is a good way of keeping cannabis users safe from harm. However the vending machine has not lasted long, it was seized after only a few days by the police that also took NZ $27,000 in cash, 700g of cannabis, bongs and pipes and four people were arrested.
